Grab bars and aging-in-place work in St. Joseph

A grab bar has to go into structure

Grab bars are commonly specified to withstand a substantial downward load — enough that the anchoring is the entire job. That means blocking or studs, not drywall anchors, and not a toggle bolt in tile because the stud was two inches off.

Interior stairs in older homes are often steeper and narrower than current practice, with a single rail or none. Adding a second rail on the open side is one of the higher-value, lower-cost changes available.

Two pieces of practical advice. Start with the bathroom and the entry — that is where the incidents happen. And involve them in the decisions if you can; work done to someone rather than with them tends to go unused.
